SUPERGEN: Highly Distributed Power Systems

ArdrossanWT-smallPowering The Future

Supergen Highly Distributed Power Systems is a consortium of UK Universities and industrial partners funded by the EPSRC.  In a £2.5m project, Consortium members are addressing the engineering challenges associated with a systems approach to the design, operation and control of future power systems.

The Highly Distributed Power System concept is based around the future vision that large numbers of generators, many (perhaps mostly) independently owned and operated, are connected across all voltage levels within the distribution network. Similarly, the adoption of demand side management measures and, to a lesser extent, energy storage technologies is significantly increased to help accommodate the intermittent and uncontrollable nature of certain sources of generation. .

The consortium's programme of work has been divided into three integrated and coordinated work packages that have been undertaken concurrently.  These are supported by one further work package to engage with related research activities and stakeholders.  This is largely an academic consortium and the majority of output has been realised as peer reviewed publications.  Where possible, software tools and models, developed by consortium members for their work, have been made available to the wider research community.  The consortium has also made certain special contributions to other publications and conferences.  It is recognised that the work of Supergen HDPS is closely associated with and builds on the efforts of several other consortia and institutions.
